Former British footballer
Trevor
Francis
died of a heart attack on 24 July aged 69. He played
among others for Birmingham from 1971 to 1979. He had

extremely close friend of Jeff Lynne since the 1970s and a huge ELO
fan. The out of print book "Trevor Francis -
Anatomy Of A One-Million Pound Player" published in 1980 contained a
long interview and some pictures of Jeff Lynne. This

THE MOVE - MESSAGE FROM THE COUNTRY (REEL TAPE)
Once again, Bill McClain from the The
Lost Planet website posted on Youtube a high resolution of the
reel tape of the song "Message From The Country" by The
Move. He
wrote this legend: "This copy is from a reel-to-reel tape recorded
by a former staffer in distribution with UA/Jet/CBS in the '70s and
early '80s. While he has mostly ELO material, there are some old Move
tracks he made copies of when UA distributed/reissued in the U.S.
Curiously, the note with this tape mentioned the songs were copies of
the Harvest and EMI label master from Europe and not the U.S. copy
(originally the album "Message From The Country"). The note also stated
the U.S. copy of the tape was a 2nd generation and didn't sound as
good. (This would have been for UA, not the Jet label.) He did not know
any further details and couldn't remember if the track sequence was
different between Europe and the U.S. (They're the same for the album.)
This tape did have some hiss, but with this transfer, there was no
additional noise reduction or compression added to the raw sound of the
tape. Just a minor channel balance, as the left channel was a bit
louder by about 2dB. The tape was transferred into a TASCAM DR-07X
digital recorded at 96KHz/24 bit resolution. All digital copying and
preparing for this video stayed at that level and the video audio was
encoded at 88.2K/24 bit. YouTube does their own "optimization", but
hopefully the raw sound of The Move sounds good here."

bande avait un peu de sifflement, mais avec ce transfert, il n'y a pas
eu de réduction de bruit ou de compression
supplémentaire ajoutée au son brut de la bande.
Il s'agit simplement d'un léger équilibrage des
canaux, le canal gauche étant un peu plus fort d'environ 2
dB. La bande a été
transférée dans un enregistreur
numérique TASCAM DR-07X avec une résolution de
96KHz/24 bits. Toutes les copies et préparations
numériques pour cette vidéo sont
restées à ce niveau et l'audio de la
vidéo a été encodé
à 88,2K/24 bit. YouTube procède à sa
propre "optimisation", mais il est à espérer que
le son brut de The Move sonne bien ici."

"I
was into ELO and Jeff Lynne all of my life, since
I was a child. But, yeah, recording "Xanadu" inspired me to go and
listen to the rest of the "Xanadu" album soundtrack again after a long
time of not hearing it, and it reminded me how much I loved and admired
Jeff Lynne's musical genius. So then after the Olivia Newton-John album
was done, I went and listened to all of the Jeff Lynne and ELO stuff
that I'd always loved but also I discovered songs and albums that I had
never heard before. I found so much that I did not even know existed
but that was fantastic (like the "Zoom" album). It was the same with
Olivia - I was a huge fan but had not heard every single song on every
album. I am not a completist but the love is real."
- The
track listing is interesting because it mixes
some classic hits ("Don't Bring Me Down", "Telephone Line"...) with
much lesser known songs ('Ordinary Dream", "Bluebird Is Dead"...). What
were your criteria for choosing the cover versions?
"I
chose songs I liked! And also I was conscious of following a theme - I
was choosing the ones about loneliness, alienation, communication
difficulties, separation. This is my state of mind and I relate to this
stuff so much. I did not want to do happy songs. Although I
did record
"I'm Alive" because it is so fun and wonderful. But I left it off the
album."
- Did you send a copy of your album to Jeff Lynne?
"Not yet!"
- Have you got a favorite ELO song and a favorite ELO album?
"I
can't single out just one top favorite. I do have a special place in my
heart for "Sweet is the Night". I can't explain why. It just does
something to me. I've recorded it twice, two versions of it."

Lost Planet website posted on Youtube a high resolution of the
reel tape of the album "A New World Record" by Electric Light
Orchestra.
Sadly, "So Fine" was edited out because of Youtube restrictions. He
wrote this legend: "This recording is from a production master for
Jet, copied by a staffer at the time onto the reel this recording comes
from. This mastering contains the "telephone" audio quality at the
start of "Telephone Line" - which was added during the original LP
mastering and cutting. The master tape did not have this effect, so it
was edited in for future mastering for records and tapes (and later
CD and digital). This tape has been sitting in a box since 1976, and
luckily only suffered a few dropouts and some tape hiss, that could be
digitally repaired. There is a tiny bit of "print through" on the tape
- even though it was wound "tails out". While a little remastering was
done to bring out everything on the tape, there is NO added compression
on this transfer. You are hearing pretty much the original mastering as
it was done in 1976."

Lost Planet website posted on Youtube a high resolution of the
reel tape of the album "Discovery" by Electric Light Orchestra. He
wrote this legend: "This recording is from a reel to reel tape, kept
in a box since 1979, by a former staffer of Jet/CBS records. Recorded
at 96K/24 bit resolution into a TASCAM RD-07X recorder. The box was
labeled "Production copy/MT of Discovery '79". He stated the tape was
probably the master tape in the U.S. for copying by Jet for the initial
release of the album. There was a note he wrote at the time in the box
that said "LP was special cut at half speed by Stan Ricker by request
of ELO, not by Jet." Remember, this is over 40 yrs old, so this tape
has held up fairly well over the years. (Unkown brand of tape on large
reel. There was some very low level "print through" even though this
tape was wound "tails out". ) There is tape hiss, which has not been
removed. There are some weird "ticks" that were on the tape - not sure
if they are static or studio noise - and there are some some tape
errors, due to some "crinkles" and creases on the tape (there's a "bad"
one at the very end of "Don't Bring Me Down" that made a weird noise
when played back. I did not try to fix it. So that's what that "weird
noise" is. The tape was "crinkled" where there was a splice to join 2
pieces of tape together.) NO further limiting/compression was used, so
some songs reach the digital peak, others don't. As it was originally
recorded and mastered by "Mack at Musicland" and Jeff Lynne."

reel tape of "Do Ya" by The Move. He
wrote this legend: "This copy is from a reel-to-reel tape recorded
by a former staffer in distribution with UA/Jet/CBS in the '70s and
early '80s. While he has mostly ELO material, there are some old Move
tracks he made copies of when UA distributed/reissued in the U.S.
Curiously, the note with this tape mentioned the songs were copies of
the Harvest label master from Europe and not the U.S. copy. The note
also stated the U.S. copy of the tape was a 2nd generation and didn't
sound as good (this would have been for UA, not the Jet label). He did
not know any further details and couldn't remember if the track
sequence was different between Europe and the U.S. (they're the same
for the album). This tape did have some hiss, but with this transfer,
there was no additional noise reduction or compression added to the raw
sound of the tape. Just a minor channel balance, as the left channel
was a bit louder by about 2dB. The tape was transferred into a TASCAM
DR-07X digital recorded at 96KHz/24 bit resolution."

of "With A Little Help From My Friends/Nowhere Man" by Jeff Lynne for
the "All This And World War II" soundtrack released in 1976. He
wrote this legend: "This is a transfer from a reel tape that was in
fair condition, from a local contact who has reel tapes of most of the
material from Jet/UA/CBS where he was a staffer between 1974 and 1983 -
and was a big fan of ELO/Jeff Lynne. This recording was done for 20th
Century for the movie, so this recording, as he stated, was likely a
"copy of a copy of a copy" that was simply saved at Jet, which
represented Jeff Lynne as his label and was credited on the album.
Transferred from the reel playback to a TASCAM DR-07X digital recorder
at 96KHz/24bit resolution. This upload to YouTube has 88.2K/24bit audio
- but YouTube automatically "optimizes" the audio. I hope it sounds OK.
This copy suffered from tape hiss and required a little bit of noise
reduction. I know that's a taboo word in the audio community, but this
needed some help. There is still a little left in. It was a balancing
act between removing excessive noise and leaving the music intact. In
any case, the frequency response was only up to about 30K on some high
frequency peaks - lower than other reel tape recordings. This recording
was also remastered for this presentation to bring out Jeff's vocals a
little bit more and some EQ to balance it all out. This is NOT an ELO
recording and apparently was not mastered by Jeff. He may or may not
have had a hand in how it was finally mastered. You can find this
recording on the original soundtrack LP and tapes, as well as a reissue
by Hip-O, which does sound pretty good. Consider this an alternate remix/remaster from
an old tape. I hope you enjoy it!"

ELO - TIME (NOT FINAL MIX - REEL TAPE COPY)
Bill McClain from the The
Lost Planet website posted on Youtube
a premix with this legend: "Enjoy this 1981 album, copied from a
production reel tape labeled "Do Not Use"/"Safety Copy"/"Not Final
Mix"/"Sequence Only". This reel tape was recorded by a former staffer
of Jet/CBS records in distribution of the tapes used to create the LPs
and other tape formats. It is UNKNOWN where in the final mastering of
"TIME" this mix fits. However, it must have been close to release, as
the final track sequence was already in place. It is presented to you
"as is", from the reel to reel tape, digitally recorded into a TASCAM
DR-07X recorder at 96KHz/24 bit, then transferred to computer for
adjusting levels and mixing with this video. The original -6dB 1K test
tone was left in this video - because some people like that kind of
stuff. You may or may not like this mix. It is NOT a "remix" or a
"remaster". You are hearing what was on the reel tape - and again, the
placement of this mix/mastering in the final release sequence is
UNKNOWN. There was no date on the tape or the boThe guy who owns the tape
(not me) couldn't remember exact dates, but best guess is this was
copied from a master used to get the final running order/times - as
Jeff Lynne and the engineers were still working on the final mix for
release. He guessed this recording was about a month before the final
master (which does sound different and has the dynamics more
compressed). He made the copy of the "pre-master" only because he
enjoyed ELO and liked the "new sound" and the new concept Jeff was
going for. It is possible that this mix was used for some pre-release
promotional cuts from the album."

THE MOVE - 8MM FOOTAGE A
rare footage of the Move was posted on Youtube. It's a short clip from
the "Top Of The Pops" British TV show broadcast on 25 May 1972. It was
shot from the audience on 8mm film by Marc Bolan of T. Rex and
featuring on thedocumentary. The audio was added to the silent video.
